The Hunters (2011) – Movie Review

When I first started watching The Hunters with my husband and brother, I thought was in store for an out-an-out slasher.  The back of the box professes that a group of kids decide to venture into a location that was always off limits to them as kids only to be confronted by the hunters. – Well, none of that is true.

We started watching and quickly realized the box lied.  So, I started watching with a different approach.  I began trying to figure out what went on.  There was a lot of yelling.  There was a war veteran Le Saint (Chris Bryant) who joined the police force.  His boss Bernard (Terrence Knox) seemingly screams all of the time and belittles Le Saint.  Le Saint decides to venture into the woods must to the chagrin of his boss.

A few very mentally unstable individuals are hunting their prey in this location and keeping mummified corpses.

Generally speaking it’s easy to write a review and detail much more of the plot than I have here, but (1) I don’t want to give anything away as there is a twist (2) the first half of the movie is completely confusing.  At the end, things come together nicely.

The acting is great.  The scenes are fantastic.  The movie itself is fun but very strange.  It’s not a horror film but a great suspense.  The director was definitely attempting to utilize symbolism in this work.  For example, when one of the men is finally taken out they die in the form of a swastika.  Generally, I don’t enjoy movies that are purposely pretentious.  I think movies can tell an intelligent story, utilize symbolism and not be up its own ass at the same time.  “The  Hunters” while mildly up its own ass is also over-the-top enough where it is able to step away from that and simply be enjoyable.

Overall 6.5/10

By Melissa Antoinette Garza I’ve talked in other reviews about my eccentric taste in men.  Vincent Price is definitely one of my massive celebrity crushes.  He had class, a unique way of speaking, a strong sensuality and a debonair style that makes me long for the days when men had […]
