The Dark Knight Rises (2012) (and the Denver Shootings)

I’m editing this review only to comment on the Denver shootings.  I wasn’t aware when I wrote this that the shootings had occurred and I realize that my review may have seemed insensitive otherwise.  My heart goes out to the families who have lost a loved one because of this insanity.

The reports are indicating at least 12 dead and many more injured because a man opened fire in a theater.  He was dressed in riot gear.  The police apprehended the suspect who is only 24 years old.  James Holmes admitted to having explosives and his mother when asked advised, “you have the right person.”

Are people just f’n nuts?  How can you do something like this?  This idiot set off a smoke bomb and then shot people at random.  How can you just be so separated from any level of the human conscience that you can do that.  This scumbag shot a 6 year old.

Police are vamping up security to ensure copycats don’t emerge which is all good and great, but I still can’t get over this complete lack of connection.  I still open doors for people and bring the grocery carriages back to the proper location so the workers don’t have to run around and find it.  I will go back to the store if I’m undercharged.  My husband and I live by the philosophy that each year we try to be a better person (he did it far before meeting me).  No resolutions – just that.  And it works…..until you hear something like this and then part of me wants blood.  Part of me wants this guy to sit down and explain how it is you can look at a 6 year old and shoot him or her!  I want answers and I want him to feel the pain that the families are going through…..and through all these emotions I remind myself I need to step back.  I need to remain connected to the human conscience even if Mr. Holmes is not.

And for that all of my thoughts and feelings will roll right into love for the families hurting and not for the hatred for the man who caused the pain.

The rest of this review is as is:

My husband and I decided to go to a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. Now, I’m 32 years old but in my 20s I could rock it.  I could stay up all night watching  episodes of Tales From the Crypt with my friends, grab breakfast at Friendly’s and then pass out for the day.  Those days are long gone.   I got up this morning and went to the mall with my mom.  We saw The Amazing Spiderman (my 2nd time) in 3D and then I went to the gym with the hubby.  Then to this film.  It’s 3:25 A.M. now and I’m falling asleep while typing but I did want to get this review to you.

First and foremost, the people in the theater sucked.  That’s not fair.  A small minority of the people in the theater sucked.  My husband and I were sitting in the front row with the hope that everyone hates those seats so we’d be away from the nonsense.  The first thing we heard was a teenager complaining about getting there early.  Be happy your parents bought you a ticket you ingrate!  Then some jerk started blasting their music as if they were in a bouncing Honda Civic outside my work.  Then a bunch of 14 or 15 year old sat directly behind us and started telling racist jokes and talking about the taste of semen to the point Steve and I left at which point one of the girls said, “buh-bye.”

At least,  when the lights dimmed and the picture started most people shut up and watched.   The trailers were great!  Disney’s OZ The Great and Powerful, looks mediocre.  Visually it looks gorgeous but I’m not so sure about the storyline or execution.  Whether it wants to or not, it’s standing against a classic of epic proportions and the demands will be huge.

Next, was a movie I can’t wait for –  Taken 2. I think Geno and I will be fighting over who gets to write the review for that one.

There’s also Argo a movie starring Ben Affleck which is based on a true story and is about hostages being taken and pretending to film a movie to rescue them.  It looks interesting.

Following that was the dreaded The Campaign which looks horrible.  Will Ferrell and poor Zach Galifianakis are in this “comedy” which looks like trash.

Lastly, is Superman Man of Steel!!!!!!! I can’t wait to see the film but alas I have to wait until next summer.  Seeing the trailer was freaking awesome though the one shown at the San Diego comic-con was much longer and I would have loved to see that!

Now on to the movie.  It opens with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) debating whether to tell the people of Gotham the truth about Harvey Dent.  Instead he lies allowing them to continue to think that he protected them 8 years prior.  Meanwhile, three men are taken hostage on a plane while the man who took them demands to know about Bane (Tom Hardy).  Bane reveals he has tricked his way onto the plane and is really one of the hostages. He with his cohorts make their plane crash without any survivors.

Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is disheveled and has serious knee problems.  Alfred (Michael Caine) comes clean and tells him that Rachel was going to stay with Harvey Dent and he burned a letter.  Bruce acts like a baby and kicks Alfred to the curb.  Alfred should have kicked his ass there.  Bruce is a bitch!

Overall, the movie is done very well.  It’s much darker than the others.  It has a definitive finish which is refreshing.  There’s nothing after the credits for those who like waiting until the very end.

Something that my husband pointed out that I thought was very clever was that most of the problems that occurred didn’t happen because of the external forces but instead by those within Gotham and the white lies that they told.  Whether it was the belief that Harvey Dent was a hero or the thought of Rachel’s undying love that kept Bruce at bay, the lack of honesty at the very least added to the destruction.

I like Anne Hathaway as an actress and as Catwoman she does well.  As Selina Kyle – not so much.  Her innocence is too over the top.  Anyone could see through her in a heartbeat.

It’s a very interesting movie and a production that is far different than the other two.

Scared Stiff Rating 8/10
