The WBO Global Welterweight Championship changed hands as Chris Kongo, 12-0, 7 KO’s, knocked out defending champion, Luther Clay, 13-2, 5 KO’s, in round nine from a left hook.
From the opening bell, Clay pushed forward and mauled Kongo, trying to make him as uncomfortable as possible and it worked to a degree. Midway through the match, Kongo took control and nearly dropped Clay in round five.
Clay rallied and began winning rounds again but round nine would be the end when Kongo landed a series of left hooks, dropping Clay hard. The referee called it and we have a new champion.
