Whisper of Crows by Jameson Hesse – BOOK REVIEW

Geno

By Forris Day Jr.

I have to say “Whisper of Crows” far exceeded my expectations. Let’s face it, there are a ton of books out there and many are not too well written, so I was very happy with the high quality story and writing in this novel. Written by filmmaker and author, Jameson Hesse, it’s the story of Kanaan James and his creepy romance with his childhood friend, Abigail Caulfield. Kanaan is a very strange and exceedingly disturbed young man, who convinces Abigail that they are a romantic couple after Abigal gets amnesia from a terrible car accident where a couple friends are killed, and another is severely brain damaged. Abigail unwittingly believes Kanaan’s story, which also includes the fact that she is on the run from the law after injuring a police officer in the car chase that supposedly led to the accident, so she must remain on the lam. They hide out in an old derelict house, where Kanaan lives his fantasy life with the young girl. All is well…for a while, but then things start to unravel. Can Kanaan keep Abigail hidden? How long can he live this lie and will Abigail’s suspicions lead to Kanaan’s demise?

As the story progresses, Kanaan slips deeper and deeper into his demented world where even he can no longer tell what is real, and what is imagined. His reality becomes so blurred with his imaginary world, that he no longer seems to have control of his life or the world around him. His wicked stepfather seems to be around every corner taunting him, while his mother seems to not notice the hell he is going through.

A fast paced read and a tightly written story, “Whisper of Crows is a book I recommend for readers who love a good scare and a thrilling story. The pacing is great, the locations are perfect and the action is fast and very disturbing. It’s a novel full of dark horror and strange characters that you will remember for a long time. Kanaan is a very demented character who does some horrific things to keep his secrets hidden, so be ready for a roller coaster ride once you start reading. A screenplay is in the works, so hopefully there will be a movie in the not too distant future.

Rating: 8.5/10 – “You may want to sleep with a light on”
