The Deepening (2006) – HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

I don’t know where to begin on this one. I guess we can begin with the writer of this flick Jim O’Rear. He also stars in this movie as “Jim.” This is one guy that you would not picture with even a mildly attractive woman but when you’re the writer you can force them into it. This really seems to be the point of the movie. O’Rear wanted to make out with attractive women and put together a horrible script and scraped together some money to pay them to kiss him and take off their clothing. I really want to end the review right here. What the fuck. Here is the rating: 0/10. I’ll continue, but I thought I would let you know exactly how horrible and pretentious this movie is. O’Rear has this look on his face as he recites his dialogue that screams: “I am just so smart. Can’t you tell by this great dialogue?”

The story…what there is of it, besides O’Rear making out with countless women, surrounds a fireman in New York City that was assigned to the 9/11 clean up and is now living in a small town, trying to live his life quietly after that disaster. Playing the role of this fireman is the co-director of this film, Ted (Ted Alderman), and he gets his women too, but not nearly as much as his fellow director, O’Rear. You can actually see a barf bag lying beside one of the girls during the make out scenes.

So we have a bunch of naked women because apparently that is what a good horror film is, right? Just naked women? Fucking stupid. I see this time and time again with these indie horror guys pushing out near porn films and calling them horror. It’s sickening. Where is the good storytelling? O’Rear follows the current trend, thinking that nudity will sell this turd but there is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie. I’m nearly ready to throw in the towel here at scared stiff reviews. I don’t know how many more of these I can sit through people.

The most publicized actor in this film was the original Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, assuming the role of Dr. Chambers. Hansen must be hard up for work…it’s the only explanation that I can come up with to explain his involvement in this project. They should have handed him his chainsaw and let him mow down the cast and save the viewer.

I don’t know why so many no/low budget filmmakers find it necessary to star in their own productions and when they do, they are always the bad ass or the stud, and these are the two roles that O’Rear and Alderman play. It’s as if they are living their fantasies through film and it’s pretty freaking ridiculous.

THE DEEPENING is poorly written, poorly filmed, poorly acted, and just terrible overall. MR. JINGLES is quickly moving up my ranking. It’s far better than this. Do not watch this unless you want to see ugly guys score with women.

Scared Stiff Rating: 0/10.
