The Deep Blue Sea (2011) – A Day For Drama

I was going through my Amazon Prime selection and came across The Deep Blue Sea and it sounded interesting enough, so I decided to give it a chance.

It takes place in London during the 1950s.  Hester (Rachel Weisz) is in a dull marriage with poor Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale) who loves her completely.  She doesn’t return his feelings.  He was the first person to ask her to marry him.  She jumped at the chance as he was a judge with a very upper class lifestyle.

Enter Freddie Page.  Freddie is a very sexy man who is friends with the judge.  After all, he’s played by Loki or Tom Hiddleston as the non-crazies refer to him.  Freddie tells Hester that she’s the most attractive woman he has ever seen – and she is taken.

She jumps him and feels no remorse afterwards.  In fact, when he is sleeping next to her, she licks his arm.  She tells him that she loves him but he doesn’t return the same affection.  Nonetheless, she lives poor Sir William and runs off with Freddie.  Since, Freddie is a RAF pilot he’s out and about a lot.

Hester becomes undone and tries to kill herself.  She doesn’t succeed but Freddie finds out she did it because he forgot her birthday.  He becomes completely irate and leaves her though she begs him to stay.  Sir William returns and offers repeatedly to take her back, but she instead runs after Freddie who just wants to end their union.

Now, it’s hard to deny the absolute sexiness of Tom Hiddleston.  The film definitely wanted the viewer to sympathize with Hester but instead I just found her as very weak.  In a way, she finds strength at the end, but it’s far too late.

Throughout the film, I feel for Sir William.  I’m just waiting for him to show up with a 20-something blonde hottie with fake boobs and a plastic face, but as this was the 1950s it didn’t happen.  He didn’t even show up with a 20-something blonde with real boobs and a fleshy face.  Instead, he just fawned over the dummy Hester.

He even offered to take her back while she slept with Freddie on the side, and the bitch said ‘no’.

Poor Sir William!  I think the director should put a scene after the credits, showing Billy-boy sexing down some hot broad.

I do suggest this movie.  There were a lot of really inventive and unique shots.  In the beginning when we see Hester trying to commit suicide the camera rotates around her as flashbacks play in her head.  It’s just a really cool and in fact that was the reason I kept watching.  I was curious to see if there were any other neat shots.

Now, I’m almost embarrassed to say, I didn’t recognize Tom Hiddleston when he appeared on screen.  It wasn’t until I asked my hubby about him that he said, “Do you mean Loki?” and then it clicked!  I did mean Loki.  Loki was the sexy guy!  I love Loki!

I love him more with his longer hair and when he’s trying to kill Thor.  I certainly hope he does it in Thor:  The Dark World. I want him to take over the world.  Loki Rules!

As for The Deep Blue Sea, it’s an interesting film that does captivate.  The acting is topnotch.  I highly suggest it on a nice Sunday afternoon when you have a few hours of uninterrupted time.

Scared Stiff Rating:  8/10

  1. Melissa,

I enjoyed your review of The Deep Blue Sea so much that I just ordered it from Amazon.com. Since the movie isn’t horror, I was surprised to see a review of it here.

    Many thanks,

    Wayne C. Rogers

    1. Awesome! I hope you like it 🙂 I thought it was a really well done flick.

I review a lot of horror but sometimes I just throw up one of a different genre. Right now I’m writing about the return of One Life to Live and All My Children on HULU. I’m a bit of a soap fanatic! 🙂

      Thanks for your kind words.

      Melissa
