For almost 13 years Sean McGuinness –AKA Shin-Goji- has been entertaining the bored masses of the interwebs with his brilliant, hilarious, and epic webcomic Twisted Kaiju Theater. Hosted on his website www.neomonsterisland.com, Twisted Kaiju Theater is a unique blend of Godzilla history, toys, and -of course- dirty jokes. The strip is made using Sean’s immense Godzilla figure collection and Photoshop. Sean’s been in this game since the early days and has outlasted other well-known comics like 8 Bit Theater, Staccato, and VG Cats (OK, so VG Cats is technically still going, but dude updates like once every three months, so…).
In recent months, Sean has evolved his art to what he’s calling Art Appreciation through Godzillafication. In basic terms, he takes well known pieces of art and adds Godzilla (and other Kaiju) into their backgrounds. Sure, this sounds kind of silly, but the real strength of this work is the flawlessness with which he integrates the giant monsters, matching the style of the original artist. His work has been featured in the Columbia Museum of Art in his hometown of Columbia South Carolina, as well as several other galleries in the surrounding area.
I recently had a chance to interview Sean, you can hear the entirety of that encounter in the Nostalgia Factor Podcast, and he had some real interesting and inspiring things to say. We talk about the history of his comic, his evolution into his local art scene, Movies (he had some choice words about the new Godzilla film in production), music, and the webcomic industry. It’s some real interesting stuff. The podcast can be streamed and downloaded here.
