I didn’t like the first MIRRORS at all. I thought it was complete garbage, so I was hesitant to even watch a straight to DVD sequel, but I’m a horror fan, so I’m a glutton for punishment.
MIRRORS 2 stars the talented Nick Stahl in the lead role as “Max,” a poor guy that lost his girlfriend in a tragic car accident that he feels somewhat responsible for. After a stint with drugs, he rebounds as a security guard at his dad, Jack’s (William Katt) mall. The other security guard would be injured on the job…well, he looked into a full length mirror and talked about being a lady killer and then his reflection ate some glass and it messed up his face. He had no choice but to retire and it left a job opening for Max.
Max is seeing a psychologist in an attempt to beat his depression over the death of his gal, but when he tells her that he is seeing ghastly images in the mirror reflections, she says that “it’s normal.” I don’t believe this to be true, but this is a horror movie and things aren’t always the way that they are in reality. You have to look at her as a “horror film psychologist,” and they would say that!
There is more going on here then meets the eye and we have a hot naked chic, Jenna (Christy Romano), taking a long shower. Every scene in this movie is too long…not that I’m complaining about the shower scene. I could have watched that infinitely. Sure, my wife may not like the fact that I’m watching a hot chick shower infinitely, but that’s what husbands do.
The death scenes are really drawn out. It’s like they didn’t have enough to make a film without stretching everything out and they did stretch every scene. Where was I? Oh yeah, Jenna, the hot naked chick showering. Max sees her naked reflection ripping off her own head (bad CGI here) and he now knows she will die and (spoiler) die she does…beheaded in the shower. More mall employees die and a there is a spirit that is behind it. Max needs to help the spirit to let it rest and must uncover the terrible secret that that mall has.
When I first started watching this movie, I was prepared to shut it off, but I elected to watch it through. I have to say that I am very glad that I did. This is one of those movies that are so bad that they are good. It is so over the top that you can’t help but to be amused. One of my favorite parts is when a reflection of a character is standing in the mirror, holding his exposed guts, screaming. There is a lot of screaming in this movie and it is so over the top that I found myself rewinding and then rewatching just to laugh some more.
MIRRORS 2 is not a good movie, but it is entertaining. If you enjoy over the top death scenes, overacting, ridiculous dialogue, naked chicks in the shower and ripping their own heads off, then this movie is for you. It was certainly for me!
Scared Stiff Rating: 6.5/10. Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, I want to watch the shower scene infinitely.
You didn’t mention the Greatest American Hero’s amazing performance! He’s the bomb.
He was so good that it didn’t need to be mentioned.
