Being a huge fan of THE EXORCIST, I was eager to see the movie “THE CONJURING,”a film that arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download on October 22 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.  I must tip my hat to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. They have been bringing the horror fans very good releases as of late, including the FRIDAY THE 13TH Complete Series, THE EXORCIST Blu-Ray set, and now THE CONJURING, which is loaded with extras.

Anyone that is familiar with ghosts and paranormal activity are familiar with the demonologist couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren.  They made the talk show circuits in the eighties and are taken quite seriously.  Playing the roles of Ed and Lorraine are Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, and they do an incredible job.

The film takes place in the 1970s and this feels like a film from that generation.  This film easily fits in with THE OMEN, THE EXORCIST and ROSEMARY’S BABY, and goes old school in the attempts to scare the viewer.  The film relied on atmosphere and had respect for its audience, allowing the imagination of the viewer to do some of the work and it works well.  What you don’t see will scare you.

The Warrens are brought to a farmhouse where a family has just moved into a new house, but they have walked into something.  The house has a dark and tragic history and the entity that lives in that home is now haunting the family.  The kids are terrified and there is no escape, but the Warrens are there to help cleanse the house, and they get more than they bargained for.

It’s a battle between good and evil and the dark presence is strong and angry.  When the mother gets possessed, Ed Warren must perform and exorcism and the scene is about as cool as it gets.  The visuals in this film are very well done and so too is the camera work.  There is one shot in the very beginning that starts looking down on the house and then goes right through the house and ends up on the porch on the other side.  You can tell that the makers of this film were interested in making a good thriller across the board.  Lately there haven’t been many horror films that you could look at and imagine them being spoken of in years to come.  This is an immediate classic and the ending is wide open for a sequel.  I cannot wait.

The film gets an 8.5/10.  It is an amazing film in a time of mediocrities.

The Blu-ray release is packed with extras and makes this a must own for any horror fan.  This is the best paranormal movie in years and the Blu-ray presentation is superb.  Below are some more details:

The Conjuring” will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on single disc DVD for $28.98.  The Blu-ray Combo Pack features the theatrical version of the film in hi-definition on Blu-ray, and the theatrical version in standard definition on DVD.  Both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and the single disc DVD include UltraViolet which allows consumers to download and instantly stream the standard definition theatrical version of the film to a wide range of devices including computers and compatible tablets, smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.*

Carrie (2013) – Horror Review

By Melissa Antoinette Garza   I love films where the bullied get revenge on those that wronged them.  Most likely my adoration for these movies stem from my lack of popularity during my younger days in school.  I was made fun of, pushed down, punched, and was encouraged to commit […]
