Mind Games (1989) – MVD Blu-Ray Horror Movie Review

MVD has just released a loaded Blu-ray of the 1989 horror/thriller “MIND GAMES” with GREASE 2 star, Maxwell Caulfield, and he is nowhere near a cool rider in this one.  MIND GAMES is one of the strangest films I’ve seen in quite a while with its own soap opera over-acting that I always enjoy.

Dana Lund (Edward Albert) is taking his wife, Rita (Shawn Weatherly) and son, Kevin (Matt Norero), on a trip in a Winnebago, but there is trouble in paradise.  Dana and Rita are not happily married and they’ve decided to give their relationship one more go with this trip.   As their son runs off during a rest stop, he comes across a shirtless Eric (Caulfield), playing the flute at a river.  Strange.

Kevin brings Eric over to meet his parents and, for some reason, and Dana takes a liking to him.  He immediately decides to bring him for the ride, even though Rita objects.  I would think that having a complete stranger alone with their 13 year old boy would not be a good idea, but Dana thinks completely otherwise.  It’s not like Eric comes off as a normal guy either.  He makes strange comments and gives weird looks, but Dana loves the guy.  Every time when Rita wants to lose him, he vehemently objects.

As the trip continues, Dana allows his son to camp outside, alone, with Eric and this is when Eric shows his true colors.  He brings Kevin to an empty house and they destroy it.  When the owners return, Eric and Kevin run and return to camp where they get down to their underwear and share a sleeping bag.  This is exactly why Dana should have listened to his wife and kicked that weirdo out of their lives.

As Eric continues the trip with the family, he becomes more intrusive and his secret plans become revealed along with a major conflict that will either destroy the family or return it to solid form.

I recommend MIND GAMES. It was really interesting and funny at times but was also disturbing.  It checks all the boxes and was presented in great fashion by MVD on this blu-ray release.
