On February 5th, Grand-Daddy Day Care arrives on DVD, Digital and On Demand from Revolution Studios, a subsidiary of Content Partners, and Universal 1440, the original content production arm of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Frank Collins (Reno Wilson) is an author with a serious case of writer’s block. His struggle gets worse when his father-in-law, Eduardo (Danny Trejo) moves in and is nothing but trouble. A former convict turned lawyer was ejected from his apartment building for misbehavior and now brings that chaos to the Collins home. His criticism of Frank is constant and overbearing and there is no break in sight until Frank’s wife and Eduardo’s daughter, Emma (Roxana Ortega), makes a suggestion that will change everyone’s life.

Eduardo’s friends are invited over to keep him busy and allow him to write his book. Walter (James Hong), Arnold (Garrett Morris) and Gabe (Hal Linden) come over to play poker and it turns ugly quickly as the group of old guys argue over the hands. Frank has had enough and makes the decision not to allow them over again until Gabe’s daughter offers him money to keep him there the next day. Grand-Daddy Day Care is born and it takes all comers.

Bonnie (Julia Duffy), her husband, Lou (George Wendt), Millie (Margaret Avery), (Barry Bostwick), and Blanche (Linda Gray) join the program and it is an interesting mix. The cast is very strong and it’s nice to see all of these familiar faces from the past. The banter between Duffy and Wendt is amusing and Bostwick is very funny in this one.

Unfortunately for the successful Grand-Daddy Day Care, they are operating without a license. An inspector (Alec Mapa) is onto them and wants to close them down, but Eduardo, being a lawyer, has the answer for him. They buy the license from Daddy Day Care, which is the only real connection from this film to the 2003 original movie with Eddie Murphy.

The conflict between Eduardo and Frank starts to subside as they become near partners in Grand-Daddy Day Care, but there is a problem. Eduardo is having major episodes where he doesn’t know where he is and wants to see his deceased wife. Frank starts to really like his father-in-law and begins trying to get him some help. The film rides the line of drama and comedy quite well with the conflicts between Frank and his wife and father-in-law done very well.

GRAND-DADDY DAY CARE is a very decent flick with a great cast and a decent variation on the DADDY DAY CARE original film and story. Danny Trejo really brings it here and does a good job being the nuisance unlikable character to the guy that you want to root for. Reno Wilson works very well off of Trejo as well.

I recommend GRAND-DADDY DAY CARE. It has a lot of familiar faces that all really give good performances and has some serious believable drama.
