Future World is a very strange story that takes place 28 thousand years in the future. There have been 4 nuclear holocausts and another ice age since present day. It’s a world overrun by mutant beings of all types. Many of these beings avery interesting and some are just plain silly, but I think that is just the point. There are still three corporations left that supply everything people need to survive, including food and weapons. These corporations are battling it out for supremacy, and to save our yet again dying world. The story takes place in the last remaining city on Earth.
What is unique about this movie is it is done in the rotoscope style. In other words live action is turned into cartoon and all the scenery is either matted on or green screened. Quite an ambitious project. The dialog is both serious and funny at times. There are some characters who speak with deep authoritative voices (think Darth Vader) and then there are some little zingers and jokes thrown in by other characters. Pay attention to all the scenery too including names on some of the stores. Lot’s of humor there too. Although this film is not really my cup of tea, it is well done and tons of work went into it, but with a 2 hour run time it is excessively long. I struggled to continue watching. The humor in it definitely kept me going though. As the film moved along I asked myself, about the film makers, “What the heck are these guys smoking?”. There is some really whacked out stuff in this that I can only assume is a result of various illegal substances. I’m just kidding…OK…I’m not. Very interesting stuff.
A dark cartoon world with freakishly interesting creatures “Future World” will satisfy the whims of anyone who loves weirdness. I don’t recommend it if you’re looking for a great story, but if you’re into dark humor, lesbian warriors and a pretty freaky guy who has a chair that can launch into outer space then this is indeed the movie for you.
