Lying in a dumpster, bloody and nearly dead, Daredevil is rescued and tended to by a nurse in her apartment. Claire (Rosario Dawson) finds Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and she is immediately compelled by him. As a nurse, she has seen many injured people coming in with claims of a masked man helping people.
It was good to see Dawson again. She has always stood out and she does very well in this dramatic role. She brings mixture of toughness and sensitivity, which is very similar to Murdock, making them a good pair. As they get to know each other, they both bring an aura of mystery and hesitation. It’s obvious that Claire has been through a lot and I’m sure that we’ll find out more as we get further into the series.
Daredevil just tried to save a young boy that was part of a trafficking operation by the Russian mob. He took on the mob and lost but he’s ready to try again…if they don’t get him first. A Russian mobster is roaming the apartment building posing as detective and when turned away by Claire, Daredevil goes on the attack and drags him to the roof to get some information from him. Claire puts on a disguise and she guides Murdock in ways to make the torture more effective. The duo complimented each other quite well.
Another epic fight scene where Daredevil single-handily takes down the entire Russian mob and rescues the child ends the show. One of the signatures of this show is the approach to the fight scenes. They are realistic and done without CGI or moves that make it a “movie fight.”
Some comic relief is put in here with Froggy (Elden Henson) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) out on the town and being silly. Froggy proves to bring enough humor to keep the show from being totally dark and aggressive. He provides moments to breathe for the audience.
CUT MAN is another great episode. It gives more of a window into the past of Murdock, including his father’s career as a boxer, and his demise. It introduces Claire, a great character, and further cements the need for Daredevil to protect the city from the many bad people that are consuming it. DAREDEVIL is a show that offers no apologies and is meant for an adult audience. It is brutal at times and follows the path set by movies like THE DARK KNIGHT and MAN OF STEEL. I really enjoyed this second episode and it gets you more invested into the series.
