Bad Moon (1996) – Werewolf Horror Movie Review

I used to say that I’m not a fan of werewolf movies, but that is starting to change. I absolutely love DOG SOLDIERS and I just gave BAD MOON a chance and what a pleasant surprise. We have a pretty cool werewolf movie with plenty of gore and fun factor to make this worth a watch. It is one of the better werewolf movies that I have seen.

We begin with Uncle Ted (Michael Pare) having sex with a hot chick. Pare must’ve been thinking ‘this is a fucking great role’ as he felt up her boobies. You owe your agent lunch Pare. Now, we have a werewolf cock-blocker screwing it all up for Uncle Ted, grabbing the girl right off of him and killing her. Unlike most werewolf movies where you need a silver bullet, Ted takes a shotgun and blows the werewolf’s head clean off his shoulders. Unfortunately, he got bit in the process and is now one of the creatures of the night. Is a werewolf a creature of the night or does that just go for vampires? I don’t fucking know. If I’m wrong, call me on it.

Now, Ted brings his trailer and goes to see his sister, Janet (Mariel Hemingway). Janet, a successful lawyer with plenty of spunk and a young son, welcomes him back, but her dog starts acting weird. The dog would not go near Uncle Ted, which could have meant several things. One, he sensed he was a werewolf, or two, he was the typical creepy uncle…aka – dog molester.

In one of the cooler scenes, the dog goes for a walk at night and sees a werewolf handcuffed to a tree, desperately trying to escape, clawing and pulling. Uncle Ted has found a way not to kill anyone…but it doesn’t last long and he doesn’t need a full moon to turn hairy. Any moon will do.

Eventually, the werewolf is loose and goes ape shit, killing a few bad people and clawing up the dog in a werewolf vs. dog fight. That is something new and the dog holds his own. I was surprised. You would think that the werewolf would just snap the dog’s neck and that would be that, but that’s only in real life. In real life, a werewolf would destroy a dog, but this is just a movie.

Uncle Ted’s secret is exposed and now the family must fend off the crazy werewolf…which pushes the fun factor to a level of 10. The fun factor is what keeps this movie alive and should satisfy any horror fans that are partial to werewolves.

BAD MOON is a winner. It is a great werewolf movie with plenty of creative gore. I highly recommend it.

Rating: 7.5/10
