In the late 1950s the USSR launched a satellite called “Sputnik” into orbit around the Earth. This one event would forever change the United States. Fear engulfed the entire nation knowing that the Russians had the capability to reach space. The Space Race had begun. “Surrounded by Thunder” is the story of Darrell Loan, a NASA engineer who was involved in some of NASA’s greatest achievements from the beginning until his retirement during the Shuttle program.
