Michael Nesmith has a special place in my heart. He is one of the main reasons why my husband and I initially connected. I had met my husband on OKCupid and noticed he liked The Monkees. I have always been a fan and Nesmith was my favorite. When I found out we shared the same appreciation for his work, I knew it was kismet.
Nesmith’s comedic and musical sketch production Elephant Parts (1981) stands the test of time and still makes me laugh. Tapeheads (1988) which is a cult film he produced is a one of the most hilarious movies of all time. Of course, The Monkees TV show is just beyond great. My husband and I own the DVD box set and I can never get enough of the absurdity of the show. It’s just a great funfest mixed with really good tunes.
By far, Nesmith’s greatest talent is his music. I remember hearing Listen to the Band for the first time. I was just a child and when I heard that I was blown away. Electricity hit my soul and made me a lifetime fan instantly. There’s pleasantness in his voice. He has a subtle twang and a real passion that makes every song seem significant in its simplicity.
Few musicians hit me the way that Nesmith does. With the exception of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, I really can’t think of another musician that stands out the way Nesmith does.
I was able to see him live at the Somerville Theatre on April 13, 2013. The concert was more than I could ask for. He introduced each song with a story that really set the atmosphere. It was like watching a montage or a movie in your mind and when he began singing everything came together. I could have listened to him simply tell a story as he is such an eloquent speaker.
Seeing Mr. Nesmith was on my bucket list. I’m so happy he came so close to my home where I could see him perform live. I’ve been to quite a few concerts in my time and I have to say that this was the most excited I have ever been.
If you have a chance to see him, I highly suggest going. It is well worth the price tag and it will make for a memory of a lifetime.
