I’ve been a fan of Jill Larson for years. As I’ve said many times before, I grew up on soap operas, and Larson portrayed Opal Cortlandt. She was Tad Martin’s biological mother, Erica Kane’s best friend and 1/2 of the super couple with Palmer.
When Geno, Steve and I decided to watch The Taking of Deborah Logan, I had no idea Larson was the star. I heard very little about the movie, other than that it was a found footage film about an elderly woman suffering from dementia.
This has to be one of the best and most frightening found-footage horror flicks released.
The movie begins with Mia (Michelle Ang) a college student creating a documentary about Alzheimer’s Disease. She chooses Deborah (Jill Larson) to base her study on. Deborah and her daughter Sarah (Anne Ramsay) agree because they need the money for medical costs.
Soon, the camera crew pick up disturbing images that can’t be explained by dementia. At one point, Deborah is on the floor and with no time lapse she appears standing on the stove. Windows open and close, Deborah begins speaking French, and tearing off her own skin.
The doctors are baffled and the only answer the crew can come to is that whatever is happening is supernatural.
Answers are provided and the conclusion is fantastic. The movie is filled with disturbing and creepy moments. Larson is amazing as both the victim and the demon.
The secrets about the past that come to light are also extremely interesting. It’s sad that I don’t recall this getting a wide release. It had everything a good horror movie should. From moment one, it was filled with great actors, suspense, a solid plot and an original take on the old fashioned ‘possession’ tales.
I can’t recommend this one enough and for Netflix users, I’d suggest watching it ASAP.
