The global action sports community mourns the loss of a young BMX icon. Monster Energy is heartbroken to learn of the tragic death of multiple X Games medalist and BMX innovator Pat Casey. On June 6, 2023, the 29-year-old was killed in a freestyle motocross accident at a private training facility in Ramona, California.

Monster Energy sends its heartfelt condolences to Pat Casey’s family and friends in this difficult time.

“We have lost one of the most progressive and talented riders in the history of action sports,” said Monster Energy CMO Dan McHugh. “Pat Casey wasn’t just instrumental to his sport, he was a beloved and dedicated member of our Monster Family, and we are devastated.

“He was also a wonderful, loving husband and father,” McHugh added. “We are sending our love to his wife, Chase, and their two beautiful children, Reid and Taytum.”

News of Casey’s tragic death elicited a wave of tributes from athletes, companies, and media outlets across the world. “Pat was not only a highly gifted and successful BMX rider, but most of all a great human, husband, and father, whom we will all miss very much,” wrote BMX Freedom magazine.

Hailing from Yorba Linda, California, Pat Casey began riding bikes at age five. Naturally gifted and supported by his father, he rose to prominence as a BMX prodigy and turned pro at the early age of 16. At that point, he had not only mastered most of the heaviest tricks in the BMX repertoire but began putting his own spin on riding technique, elevating the sport in the process. As a trick innovator, Casey pushed the boundaries with inventions such as the Fakie Cash Roll and Double-Decade Backflip, which he landed as the world’s first rider in competition.

Mentored by his BMX enthusiast father, who schooled Casey on building ramp structures, he realized his vision of creating his own backyard training facility: the legendary Dreamyard. Started in 2013 as a basic backyard ramp in Riverside, California, the facility constantly evolved into a full-scale park and dirt course encompassing more than 10,000 feet of terrain. Over the years, the Dreamyard welcomed the world’s best athletes and provided the backdrop for a four-part video series starring Casey that garnered more than 1.3 million combined views.

During pandemic restrictions in 2021, Casey opened up his Dreamyard to the action sports world and hosted the BMX portion of X Games. Making dreams come true, Casey earned his very first X Games gold medal in BMX Dirt on his own turf. Ultimately, he earned five X Games medals in his career (one gold, three silver, and one bronze).

A devoted family man, Casey raised his children Reid and Taytum into the BMX lifestyle. He was also known to generously open his Dreamyard facility to a new generation of athletes as a place to hone their skills and thrive under his mentorship. Alongside Monster Energy teammate Axell Hodges, Casey introduced the Moto X 110 discipline on pit bikes as an official X Games medal event in which he competed.

The many lives Casey has touched and his positive impact reflected directly in tributes on social media. Fellow athletes and BMX enthusiasts shared their tributes under the hashtag #patcaseyforever.

“The development of the Dreamyard was Pat’s gift to the world. And his pursuit of what could be achieved on a BMX bike,” said Casey’s teammate, Andy Buckworth, on Instagram. “You were the perfect role model in every way… you made being a dad look so rad… you were incredibly talented and a pioneer in so many ways,” said action sports personality and podcast host Luke “The Dingo” Trembath on Instagram. “The world delivers us the most wonderful gifts that share with us enjoyment, life, love, strength, commitment, guidance, and a way of being. Pat Casey was a gift. Pat’s pursuit of progression in BMX was unprecedented, only to be matched by his love and commitment to his family,” said BMX legend Jamie Bestwick.
