Which Side of the Fence are You on?

When talking about scary movies I stand firmly on the side of ‘I love them’ mostly!

Mostly, because there are some genres of horror that I prefer to others, and there are some that can have me jumping whereas others have me saying ‘eww’ several times over. I am not too keen on the slasher type of horror film leaning more towards the psychological teasers that have you wondering what is going to be just around the next corner.

With my love of the horror genres it was with interest that I met my eldest sons’ new girlfriend. She, unlike myself cannot watch anything that could even remotely be called ‘horrific’ and that includes such films like Jurassic Park. Her imagination goes into overdrive and the nightmares she suffers afterwards are simply not worth the thrill of being scared for the length of a movie.

So why is it that some of us can’t get enough of scary things whether they are in the form of movies or in celebration of Halloween and horror novels, whilst others wouldn’t thank you for any of those things?

One reason might be that some of us seek out thrills whether they are gained by watching scary movies or sought by joining in an immersive live casino experience both are exciting and entertaining for many and more importantly, both are under our control.

In fact, the movie producers often team up with games developers to provide games with a horror slant, and these movie themed games include video clips, sound bites and characters from the movie to bring the film to life once more, but in a different format.

Having your heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase for a little time appeals to many people, and physiological arousal stays with us for a little time afterwards intensifying any fun you happen to be having, and this ‘feel good factor’ is what draws many people back to watching a horror movie with friends, family or a significant other.

Of course, if you happened to experience something negative whilst or after watching a scary movie then you could quite possibly want to skip the next offer of a scary movie.

It seems that some people are just wired to enjoy the high levels of physiological arousal, and these are the people who love the adrenaline rush and would probably enjoy roller coasters and other exciting activities that have a little danger added to them.

Similarly, that wiring could also explain why other really dislike scary movies o anything related to horror. Some individuals will have a harder time screening out unwanted stimuli in the environment like an annoying tag on a piece of clothing or a room being an uncomfortable temperature.

Luckily, there is room for all of us whether we enjoy horror or not, and personally I am looking forward to the next offering in horror movies and after those the games that will be developed.
