I had zero expectations for this film. I expected it to be a rip-off of the Twilight series. I’m happy to say that it had a little more going for it.
The premise follows shallow jerkface Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) runs for school president. He wins and decides to mess with a witch named Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen). Kendra puts a curse on him making him ugly. He has one year for someone to genuinely say that they love him or he stays that way forever.
His father only cares about money and hiding him away. His girlfriend and best friend start making out as soon as Kyle disappears.
The only one who likes him at all is Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens). He clings to that, saves her in the middle of the night and takes her into a bedroom within his home. He tells her that his name is Hunter and though Kyle is nowhere to be found she doesn’t put it together.
This is a sweet romantic movie. Olsen did very well. I remember when she irritated the hell out of me on Full House. I think I was the only one in the world that didn’t find the antics of Michelle Tanner cute and hilarious. Nonetheless, she grew into quite a good actor.
Neil Patrick Harris also portrays a blind tutor and did an amazing job. He has always been great and I’m ecstatic that his career has taken off so well.
This is an old tale placed in teenage times. It was just an average romance but much better than expected.
