Animal Planet has some really cool shows and this is certainly one of them. Now I’m not much of a fisherman but “River Monsters” holds the interest of anyone who has the slightest bit of curiosity about the world around them. The host Jeremy Wade is an avid fisherman and he sets out all around the world investigating myths and legends about man eating and killer fish. In this 2 disc set he tries to figure out what has attacked several men in Papua New Guinea ripping their genitalia off (Ouch!). He heads to New Zealand to investigate an 8 foot man-eater, then to Argentina to research stories of a creature with a razor sharp blade on it with flesh destroying venom. 6 episodes plus 2 bonus episodes make a total of 8 flesh ripping, bone crunching, blood sucking stories that will make you afraid to take a dip in the river.

The series is done documentary style with lots of ominous music and surprise sound effects every time he catches even the smallest fish. Somewhat melodramatic but it keeps it interesting. I love the scenery on the rivers and you do get a taste of the different locations with the wonderful photography. A little overdramatic with the quick video cuts and screeching string music but then again fishing isn’t the most exciting spectator sport. Jeremy Wade also narrates each episode with an air of mystery and suspense.

If you like to fish, watch people fish, like people who look like fish or like creepy things maybe you should investigate “River Monsters” on TV or check out this 2 dvd set.
