Movies about time-travel, when done properly make some of the greatest moments of entertainment history. In 2007, a Spanish film called “TimeCrimes” was released which delved into a man travelling back 1 hour and facing the subsequent consequences when faced with his double.
“Triangle” shares the same feel of “TimeCrimes” and is done just as well. It begins when Jess (Melissa George) attends a sailboat trip with Greg (Michael Dorman) and a few friends of his. It’s obvious that Greg and Jess are feeling each other out romantically, much to the dismay of his friend Sally (Rachael Carpani) who doesn’t like Jess. She brings along Heather (Emma Lung) in hopes to set Greg up with her.
Soon, a storm engulfs them and capsizes the boat. Stranded in the middle of the water, they are saved by an enormous ship. Grateful, they get on board, but Jess immediately feels that something isn’t right. She starts getting the feeling as though she had been there before. Adding to the eeriness, it appears the ship is empty. Everyone begins looking around to find someone. In the shadows, they see a figure but it quickly vanishes.
A predator with a bag over its head begins stalking and shooting at the passengers. Odder still, when Jess attempts to help, Sally and her husband Downey (Henry Nixon) back away. They tell her that she’s the killer.
Jess starts fighting the killer and right before pushing her over the edge, she hears her own voice telling her that the only way to save their son is to kill them all if they board. Then she sees herself with the crew on the capsized boat waving at the ship for help.
“Triangle” is an interesting movie from start to finish. This is the type of horror/suspense that should get its run in the movie theater. The acting is topnotch. The characters are well-developed and the storyline compels from scene one. There are elements of surprise and some unanswered questions that remain open for speculation at the end.
I highly suggest those who view this film and enjoy it to check out “TimeCrimes.” Both are movies to watch again and again to see what was missed in the initial viewings.
