Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

I like a good chick flick. Most guys really do but are afraid to admit it. “Sweet Home Alabama” is the story of Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) who has left her white trash family in the south to pursue a career as a fashion designer in The Big Apple. She is dating the very handsome Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey) who is the son of New York City Mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergen). Everything is going along fine in Melanie’s life, great career, great boyfriend and good friends until Andrew proposes to her.

He proposed!!!!! YAAYYY!! This is what we want in a chick flick right? Well the problem is Melanie is still married. In fact she married her high school sweetheart Jake Perry (Josh Lucas) right out of high school, had some tough times and left him to pursue her career. It’s now seven years later and he has refused to sign the divorce papers.

All kinds of funny situations arise when Melanie has to go back down to Alabama to get Jake to sign the papers. We see a really nice character change as Melanie starts to talk with her southern accent again and we meet all her redneck friends and we learn, as Melanie does too, who she really is. All is not as it seems when Melanie starts bumping into the old gang as she tries to persuade Jake to sign.

This is a really good, really predictable, but also really fun movie. It’s got the always gorgeous and wonderful actress Reese Witherspoon so that should be enough for any guy to want to watch. If that isn’t enough it has a cool airplane in it that we never see fly and a lovable hound dog. The ladies will certainly tear up on this journey of discovery, the guys will more than likely claim they got a piece of lint stuck in their eye at key times during this movie.

I really enjoyed the locations. Some examples were a local redneck bars, a house on the lake, a town fair, and a beautiful southern mansion. It’s got all that homey goodness you’d expect in Grandma’s oatmeal cookies, except this is a movie….so you can’t eat it. It’s a feel good movie that you can watch over and over again. “Sweet Home Alabama” is a must own in anyone’s video collection.

Ya…I like chick flicks…Ya wanna fight about it!!

Scared Stiff Rating: 7.5/10 stars “I hope Neil Young will remember”

  1. I love this movie too Forris. I own it but spare Steve. Maybe, he’ll like it. If not I’ll blame you.

    1. I know Steve will love it. Don’t fall for that lint in his eye crap either. He’s crying! Feel free to blame me if he truly does have lint in his eye.

Reviewed by Geno McGahee I didn’t like the first MIRRORS at all. I thought it was complete garbage, so I was hesitant to even watch a straight to DVD sequel, but I’m a horror fan, so I’m a glutton for punishment. MIRRORS 2 stars the talented Nick Stahl in the […]
