Very rarely do I find a slasher from the 80s I haven’t seen, but it certainly is a treat whenever I come across one.
I’ve seen the cover for Splatter University for years and for some reason both my brother Geno and I confused it with the God-awful horror spoof Return to Horror High (1987).
Though it does open with some rather silly moments, Splatter University is a straight-up 80s slasher. We start in an insane asylum where the patients are absolutely bonkers. One murderous nutjob escapes and makes their way to a Catholic operated college.
The new professor Julie Parker (Forbes Riley) keeps getting in trouble with the other teachers and dean as she tries to introduce new material not approved. She unsuccessfully tries to connect with her class which are all deadbeat losers who act much more like high school students than pupils at a university.
Soon, the murders begin. Neither teachers nor students are immune from the killer’s rampage. The identity remains a mystery as Julie attempts to put the pieces together and discover who the murderer is.
When the killer is revealed, though not entirely a shocker, it is quite amusing. The whole movie is a fun ride as the suspects mount. The conclusion is absolutely hilarious.
This is a great Friday night movie to enjoy when you don’t really want to think about too many things and just enjoy a fun old-school flick. I highly recommend it. Most horror and whodunit fans will find this interesting, entertaining and add this to their list of better-than-average slashers.
