Scream Bloody Murder (1973) – HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

I love the 70’s brand of horror…especially the low budget stuff. There was something special about this time. It has a great look and the acting was usually over the top and amusing and that is certainly the case with SCREAM BLOODY MURDER.

Matthew (Fred Holbert) is a child with a lot of issues. As a child, he ran over his father intentionally with a farm tractor but would lose his hand in the process. He would go away for many years and return only to find his mother hooked up with a new guy. This doesn’t go over with Matthew despite all the attempts by the new dad to be nice. When he sees him making a move on his mother, he flips and kills him. When his mother finds out, Matthew tries to convince her that she hated his affections. “You hated it! You hated it! You hated it!” It was hilarious. Matthew accidently kills his mother in one of the best death scenes of all time and then cradles her and screams “Mama!” It is such a hilarious scene.

On the run, Matthew meets up with a couple and when he sees their affections toward each other, he kills them both. This is when he begins to see visions of his dead mother in demonic form. She looks rather neat…almost like one of the demons from the EVIL DEAD.

Matthew meets up with a hooker, Daisy (Leigh Mitchell), and considers her a friend, but when he discovers her occupation, he flips. He wants to rescue her from this life and tells her that he is rich. To convince her, he kills an old lady and maid and takes over a mansion. When Daisy sees his home and his car, she’s impressed but resists staying there. That’s when she becomes his prisoner.

The truth begins to come out as Daisy remains tied up. When there is a knock at the door, she is dragged into a room with two dead bodies. At the door is Dr. Epstein played by Angus Scrimm from PHANTASM. It’s a very small role. He’s dead in about two minutes, but he was still very good in this one.

Matthew goes too far with Daisy and he has to go on the run again, leading to a very creepy conclusion. SCREAM BLOODY MURDER is a strange and fun movie and absolutely worth a watch if you dig the odd low-budget films of the 70’s. I highly recommend it.
