PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A gothic punk Caribbean love story arises in the ruins of a coconut plantation in rural Trinidad in MOKO JUMBIE, the feature film debut of filmmaker Vashti Anderson.
Set in 1990 against the backdrop of the country’s failed coup attempt, Young Asha (Vanna Girod) has just returned from her home in England to her native island seeking her roots. What should be a brief visit turns into much more as she’s drawn to Roger (Jeremy Thomas), an idealistic, pan-platying, crab-catching Afro-Caribbean fisherman across the road. The taboo attraction between the two teenagers grows despite family disapproval, political turmoil, a clash between cultures, and mysterious hauntings by ancestral spirits.
An Official Selection at the 2017 LA Film Festival where it was also nominated for the World Fiction Award, as well as the Edinburgh and Curacao International Film Festivals, MOKO JUMBIE is an intense blurring of reality, fantasy, superstition, and truth. Christopher Llewellyn Reed of Hammer to Nail says that first-time Director Anderson”elegantly sidesteps the ordinary, imbuing her heartfelt island love letter with visual wonder, lyrical depth, and an invigorating sense of the fantastic” and that she “weaves a tangled web of cinematic intrigue that is gripping and satisfying in equal measure.”
Along with its DVD and Digital debut, MOKO JUMBIE will also be available on IndiePix Unlimited, the streaming subscription service of IndiePix Films.
