Ray Liotta plays Harry, a good cop with a bad gambling problem. His friends on the unit are dirty and one in particular is a real douche as he sleeps with his friend’s wife. He also forces another woman to sleep with him to save her husband’s life.
Harry bets on everything. He bets on horses, on poker, for dates, etc. He’s also a superstitious man who will dump a girl because he thinks she’s bad luck and pursue her mother because he thinks she’s good luck.
Liotta sells this movie from beginning to end. In my unbiased opinion, I think Liotta should be in every movie ever made. I also think the jerkoff on YouTube who asked him about Dancing with the Stars should be smashed in the mouth with a gun the way Henry Hill (Ray Liotta in GoodFellas) did to the “rich fuck(s)” (direct quote from the book WiseGuy). Maybe that’s too severe, but the guy was a jerk and I’d like to at least see someone teach him how to treat a movie star – even one of Liotta’s caliber – as a person.
Anyways, Harry ends up owing this guy with a lisp Chicago (Tom Noonan) who likes him but has him beat up when Harry says he sounds like a mixture of Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd. He was a fan of cartoons too.
There are so many great scenes in this film. In one scene, a woman has a gun to her husband’s head. She tells Harry that she found him in bed with her 12 year old daughter. Harry responds by saying, “Shoot him.”
When Harry gets over his head, he decides to pull a heist with the dirty cops and rip off a loan shark. Things do not go as planned as one can imagine.
Great film – from beginning to end.
Ray Liotta is awesome. His intensity is amazing! He’s a great actor who only gets sexier with age. If a film has Ray Liotta in it – watch it and you’re gonna have a good time.
