Night of the Lepus (1972) – Science Fiction Horror Film Review

Ever since Arino BunBun came into my life, I’ve been obsessed with bunnies.  They’re so cute and sweet and I love them something awful.  So, when I found out that there was a horror movie about them killing people, I had to see it.

The movie actually starts with some disturbing footage of poor bunny rabbits being hurt by people who were attempting to rid their farms of them.  One such man, Cole Hillman (Rory Calhoun) asks his friend Elgin Clark (DeForest Kelley) for help.  Clark enlists zoologist Roy Bennett (Stuart Whitman).  Roy and his wife Gerry (Janet Leigh) begin to inject rabbits with hormones to see if it will stop them from reproducing.

Their daughter asks them for one of the rabbits.  Unbeknownst to them she switches one of the rabbits who have not been injected with hormones for one that has.  They allow her to take one they think is hormone-free.  The bunny escapes and soon all the rabbits are 150lbs and no longer vegetarian.  They are after humans!

Soon, the bunnies are mauling and murdering everyone.

The special effects are campy as it’s just regular size rabbits on model sets, and during the attack scenes a man in a bunny suit often jumps on the victim.

Many people pan this film because the bunnies simply aren’t scary.  My brother Geno and husband Steve weren’t crazy about the film.  Geno rated it a 3 and Steve rated it a 5.  I would have probably rated it an 8 but when I mentioned that rating, I was given many bad looks.

Nonetheless, I do recommend this for fans of the it’s-so-bad-it’s-good genre.  This is certainly one of those!

Scared Stiff Rating:  7/10
