My Amityville Horror (2012) – Horror Documentary Movie Review

One of the most recognizable claims of paranormal history is that of The Amityville Horror.  The tale of George and Kathy Lutz spawned a number of books, two films and a series of sequels.  Though many dispute the tale as complete lies and question the Lutz’s motives, some still believe it to be true.

Daniel Lutz, son of Kathy and stepson of George defends nearly all of what was in the original book and first film.  Though he was just a small child, he recalls the events in remarkable detail.  There are even new revelations like George’s supposed telekinesis  ability.

Lutz seems convincing in his testimony though often hostile.  He speaks of emotional and physical abuse endured while he was a child, and to these accusations I am a complete believer.  Regardless, if the paranormal events actually occurred, there is little question that something awful happened in Daniel’s life which shaped him into who he is.

When Lutz is asked to prove what he is saying is true and is asked to take a lie detector he declines.  Now, some may believe that this is evidence that he is telling lies, but I don’t necessarily believe that.  There is a possibility that he doesn’t feel the need to prove himself, but then one wonders why the documentary?  He says he is doing it for his children which I believe on one level is the truth, but I also think that there is a monetary mindset as well, and there’s nothing wrong with that;  but if you’re going to take money to produce something to the public where you are making statements that seem outlandish, it would be nice if you did take the test that is asked of you.

Unlike many, I do believe in the paranormal.  I don’t believe it is as in your face as the experiences of the Lutz’s.  I think there are typically subtle signs.  I’m not saying that the events are out of the realm of possibilities, but I do tend to think it’s unlikely.

The documentary is interesting.  It does lag and become repetitive in certain areas.  I would have liked to see old interviews with George and Kathy as they did run the TV show circuit, but unfortunately that footage wasn’t used.

I have to say that this is definitely worth watching, but one doesn’t leave with anymore belief in The Amityville Horror than they had prior to watching.
