MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD (1978) – CULT/HORROR Movie Review

By Chris Summerfield

This movie again was on the banned list, and was banned within the UK for graphic violence, however finally released in the UK in 2001, though being edited, to make it more viewer friendly, however there is still animal cruelty within the movie…

So the movie, Susan Stevenson (Ursula Andress) is seeking her husband, Henry, whom it seems as disappeared while on an expedition, somewhere in the jungles of New Guinea. Along with her brother, Arthur, she enlists the help of, Professor Edward Foster (Stacy Keach) for his knowledge and wisdom of the area, who thinks he may have headed for the mountain of Ra Ra Me on the island of Roka.

The journey is one of hazardous and dangerous as in one incident they lose bearer in a crocodile attack, however as they head closer to the mountain they meet up with a man named, Manolo (Claudio Cassinelli), he has been staying at a missionary camp and agrees to join them. And as the journey continues it seems, Susan, Arthur and Professor Foster have dark motives to be heading to, Ra Ra Me Mountain that are revealed as the movie develops, and as regards, Ra Ra Me Mountain it is the home of a primitive Cannibal tribe, unfriendly and very hostile towards trespassers, leading to a ultimate climax where the two remaining survivors, Susan and Manolo have to escape if they are to survive…

This is a cannibal movie, just like, Cannibal Holocaust, that slaughter animals, just so to make the movie more shocking, where I personally feel it actually just makes the movie distasteful, as animal life should not be slaughtered just for what the Director and his team presume are the delights of the viewers, and what is really annoying is the fact it has a great plot that alone is appealing without the slaughter of animals, if they had just focused more on the plot rather than bringing cruelty in to the movie… however the version I have as very limited animal cruelty, though it can still be stressful to watch…

As regards marking up this movie, the plot is really good and at times it can be a gripping movie to watch, and it is a real horror in the sense of mindless slaughter, so leaves me to say… my message to wannabe cannibal movie makers, learn from the mistakes of these movies, leave out the animal cruelty and obviously if your plot is good, you have a good movie…

For the plot…
