MARIO BARRIOS HONORED WITH PROCLAMATION FROM MAYOR OF SAN ANTONIO – Boxing News

WBA super lightweight world champion, Mario Barrios (25-0, 16 KOs), was honored on October 31, 2019 by the city of San Antonio, Texas in recognition of winning his first world title, which occurred last month on Fox PPV.
 
Barrios, a humble fighter who is a positive role model in his community, was excited to be recolonized by Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio, TX.
 
“It is tremendous getting the support of my community,”  said Barrios. “I am a San Antonio native, and I am proud to be from San Antonio, and to be honored by the city I grew up in, is as meaningful as winning the world title. I have worked so hard just to get to this point and it means so much to me, words can not express.  I want to thank Mayor Ron Nirenberg and his colleagues for their continued support.”
 
Barrios defeated Batyr Akhmedov by unanimous decision, after dropping Ahkmedov twice in the fight, en route to a star-making performance that saw him win an unanimous decision, and the first world titlist from San Antonio in 25 years. 
 
“Being a world champion was my number one goal in the sport of boxing, and now keeping the belt is my main priority,”continued Barrios. “Knowing San Antonio is behind me 100% makes me that much more focused than ever to keep my title.”
 
Mayor Ron Nirenberg, District 14 Representative Adriana Rocha, Judges Cynthia Chapa and Peter Sakai, were on hand to present the undefeated fighter, Mario Barrios with the award as Barrios looks forward to more titles in his near future.
