Dario Argento is known for his artistic horror films. He knows how to create something beautiful, even if it’s gruesome. I was very interested to see what he would contribute to the MASTERS OF HORROR series and his entry “JENIFER” proved to be an incredibly fun film. It wasn’t scary, but it was very enjoyable.
Frank Spivey (Steven Weber) is a cop and he stumbles across a guy dragging a girl with a rope. He bends her over and raises a meat cleaver. Spivey shoots and kills him and then rescues the girl. She is disfigured and doesn’t speak, but Frank is very drawn to her. Well, she had an incredible body…so that may be part of it. Steve Weber wrote this as well and good for him. This film is full of sex scenes with Weber and if you’re going to write something and put yourself in it, why not have sex scenes with hot chicks throughout? Good for you Weber! I’m impressed!
When Jenifer (Carrie Fleming) has no place to go, he takes her home, but his wife isn’t happy with that. She was still angry with him from the night before when he basically raped her. I’m not sure if he was too rough or if he gave it to her in the wrong hole, but whatever the case, she did not enjoy the loving. Frank doesn’t have to worry about that too much. He starts banging Jenifer. He can get over the fact that she’s not beautiful because from the neck down she’s great and she is more than willing to have sex with him whenever he wants.
The problem with Jenifer is that she kills things. She starts off by killing the house cat and eating the guts. Frank is furious but forgives her after some sex. When Jenifer murders two others, they go on the run and end up at a cabin in the woods, but she would find more people to kill. Frank, eventually, has to do the right thing and stop her rampage, but he suffers the same fate as the man that he initially killed.
I loved Weber in this. His acting was so over the top. He screamed with regularity, bringing his A game to this short film. I also liked Carrie Fleming in the role of Jenifer. She played it very well. My favorite Jenifer moment was when Frank finds a dead body in his fridge and he starts to go mad and begins laughing. Jenifer thinks that she made him happy and starts jumping up and down and claps. It was hilarious.
JENIFER is a great deal of fun. This isn’t scary, but it is very interesting and amusing. I highly recommend it.
