In his middleweight debut, Jaime Munguia, 35-0, 28 KO’s, systematically beat down Spike O’Sullivan, 30-4, 21 KO’s, and showed why he’s one of the bigger names in boxing, but there is plenty for room for improvement.
In the first couple rounds, Munguia dominated and he had O’Sullivan in trouble at the end of round three, but a counter right hand would jar Munguia and give the O’Sullivan corner hope. Midway through the fight, Munguia adjusted to the power of his opponent and it was business as usual as he beat down O’Sullivan to the body and the head, with some shots straying low, leading to a point deduction.
In round eight, the fight was hopeless for O’Sullivan as he was getting hurt with regularity and his punches were having no effect. It became a one-sided beat down with the result not in question. In round 11, an exhausted O’Sullivan had nothing left and Munguia pushed the issue, throwing fast and hard combinations. It convinced the O’Sullivan corner to throw in the towel as O’Sullivan collapsed to the canvas.
Munguia is an entertaining fighter and a welcomed addition to the middleweight division but he is still a vulnerable fighter that will have some issues with the upper echelon of the division.
