FOUR HORRIFYING HAUNTED HOUSE TITLES TO GET YOU READY FOR INSIDIOUS 3

On June 5th, the Insidious series will roar back into theaters with Insidious: Chapter 3. A prequel set before the Lambert family ever arrived on the scene, the film follows a gifted psychic trying to protect a young teenage girl. The third installment should prove to be just as full of scares as its predecessors.

Of course, the arrival of this film means one thing: people still love haunted houses. And while FrightPix may not have Insidious, you can still find tons of creepy, scary flicks, all set in the houses you wouldn’t want to enter for anything, to tide you over until June 5th. Here are four of the very best:

First Born

Fact: if you grew up in the 80s, you had a crush on Elisabeth Shue. And even if you didn’t grow up in the 80s, you still probably have a crush on Elisabeth Shue. As the star of Cocktail, Adventures in Babysitting, Leaving Las Vegas, and, of course, The Karate Kid, she was damn near impossible to not fall in love with. Which is what makes First Born so creepy: it makes you watch a star you love completely falling apart. Get creeped out as a newly pregnant Shue and her husband (Luther’s Steven Mackintosh) move to a giant old mansion in the country, only to drive Shue to insanity by the house’s spirits, rats, the mysterious former tenants, and some seriously messed up nannies. If there’s any lesson to be had from this terrifying film it’s this: moving to the country is never a good idea. Ever.

The Attic

Speaking of places to never go: if you are feeling creeped out, threatened, or generally in a horror-movie situation, never go to the attic. It’s a terrible plan, always. Emma Callan however (played by Peggy Olson herself, Elizabeth Moss) goes into the attic of her new home. And then bad things happen. Really, really bad things. With a stellar supporting cast including John Savage (The Deer Hunter), Alexandra Daddario (True Detective) and Jason Lewis (Sex and the City), The Attic plays on all of your fears of a creepy new house, and then some, leaving you shaking, shrieking, and seriously thinking of putting a lock on your attic door.

Ominous

Family vacations are pretty much never a good idea, right? Think of your worst family vacation. Now, multiply that by 10 and you’ll have The Callahans family vacation. A nice relaxing trip to the mountains goes wrong when the Callahan children find a paranormal presence in their secluded cabin, changing the lives of both the living and the dead. Ominous will leave you pretty appreciative for all those years of dysfunctional family vacations that you used to complain about. After you see what happens when two generations of secrets are revealed, these will seem like vacations in the land of milk and honey.

Fear of the Dark

Remember when you were growing up and you thought monsters lived under your bed? Remember when your parents would assure you that they weren’t real? Twelve year old Ryan Billings wasn’t that lucky, seeing as the monsters under his bed were in fact, real. Ryan spends his nights not counting sheep, but lying awake watching the evil darkness in his room grow stronger and stronger as it feeds off his fear. On a dark rainy night, as most pivotal plot points in horror movies tend to happen, Ryan is left alone with his older brother Dale (played by Gossip Girls Kevin Zegers). When the power goes out and darkness takes over, will this be the night that the evil is finally going to take him?
