HERE ARE 5 “REAL” MONSTERS AND THE TOWNS THAT HOST THEM

Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger, the husband and wife writing team, have collaborated on countless books on supernatural events and creatures. Their newest, premiering this month, is HAUNTED: Malevolent Ghosts, Night Terrors, and Threatening Phantoms (Visible Ink Press / $19.95)

HAUNTED pulls back the curtains on the hidden and frightening world of supernatural spirits, menacing beings, haunted mansions and ghostly towns. (Unfortunately, Brad Steiger died after completing this book.)

Here is just a sample of what’s in store for readers— 5 spooky monsters to shiver your timbers. If you’re in the mood for chills, you may want to visit, Halloween or not!

THE DOVER DEMON, DOVER, MA—“The Thing” was spotted by William Bartlett and two other teenagers April 21-23, 1977. It stood about four feet tall and carried it’s hairless, rough-textured body on two spindly legs. Its arms were also thin and peach-colored.

GHOSTLY MINERS, SILVER CLIFF, COLORADO: This once-booming mining town has dwindled to fewer than six hundred residents today, not counting the ghosts. Local folklore has it that lights have been seen in the local cemetery since 1880. According to old stories, the cemetery had become the final resting place for many miners who lost their lives in the mines. The flickering lights resemble the little lights worn on the miners’ caps, and they belong to the restless souls of miners, who still search for the silver they never found.
FLATWOODS MONSTER, FLATWOODS, WV—Kathleen May described the alien being that she and seven other Flatwoods, WV residents saw on September 12, 1952, as looking more scary than the Frankenstein monster.

THE JERSEY DEVIL, SOUTHEASTERN NJ—Some witnesses have said that the Jersey Devil that haunts the Pine Barrens is a cross between a goat and a dog with cloven hoofs and the head of a collie. Most of the people who have sited the creature also mention a long tail, and wings. People have been sighting the Jersey Devil since 1735.

MOTHMAN, POINT PLEASANT, WV—On November 15, 1966, two young married couples described a winged monster, at least seven feet tall with glowing red eyes, looming in front of them as they drove through the marshy area near the Ohio River outside of Point Pleasant, WV. More witnesses came forward with accounts of their sightings, and the legend of Mothman was born.
