Happy Hell Night (1992) – HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

By Geno McGahee

A mental hospital has a secret. A demon was unleashed and killed five fraternity brothers at Winfield College. This demon has been locked in the basement for 25 years until a fraternity stunt releases him, and now this creepy bald dude with black eyes is back at the college with a pick axe.

Now the characters aren’t that well developed. We have a couple of brothers fighting for the love of the same girl and we have their father, Henry Collins (Darren McGavin), who steals the show. Collins is informed of this stunt and makes his way down to the college to tell his sons the secret that brought the demon there and how it was his fault. He also knows how to get rid of the demon, which has now just about killed everyone, especially that annoying geek that hosts a college T.V. show. This idiot has a mullet, a mustache, and will annoy the hell out of you from the opening minutes of this flick. He is one of the problems that this movie has.

Now, as Collins spills the beans and tells his children that he made a deal with the devil. In exchange for success, Collins helped unleash this demon on the town, and has regretted it ever since. The really bad thing about his movie is the lack of a genuine feel to the character. When their dad is hacked by the demon, the brothers just go on as if nothing happened. Perhaps they were molested by him and therefore didn’t really care that he got hacked up, but they never really went into it.

The best part of the film is when the father, who survives the initial attack, is now missing. One of the sons, while searching the frat house, finds somebody laying flat, and wrapped up in a blanket. Who is it, you ask? Well, it must be the demon right? Since the demon has, well never, wrapped himself up in a blanket before and certainly hasn’t played any games like this at any other point in the movie. Well, the son thinks that it is the demon and grabs a pick axe and drives it through the chest of this person, who just happens to be his father. It is hilarious to see Collins sit up in shock and then look at his son.

Now, the characters don’t really act naturally. When the first person is killed, the friend gets away and NEVER reports it to the police, even when he is confronted by them! Then, when their father is killed right in front of the two sons, they just keep going, completely unaffected. Now, this movie gets points off for bad acting, surely, but overall this movie is very decent. The good really outweighs the bad.

The demon is very creepy and he usually creeps out of the darkness, which keeps you guessing. The story is pretty good and it keeps you entertained. There is some tits and ass and the death scenes are average. I do recommend this movie. It is not bad.

Scared Stiff Rating: 7/10 Not Bad
