WBA super featherweight champion, Gervonta Davis, 22-0, 21 KO’s, stopped Ricardo Nunez, 21-3, 19 KO’s, in the second round, thanks in large part to a very quick stoppage by the referee in the hometown of Davis. This is why people hate boxing.
In the first round, Davis landed the better shots, but nothing of note. In the second round, Nunez relaxed in a clinch and got hammered with a left hook. He then was hit again and backed up to the ropes, only to have the referee jump in and call the fight. Davis may have won by knockout that round, but this was a very bad stoppage in a title fight where Nunez had the power to turn it around.
Unfortunately, we will never know how that fight would go because the referee elected to stop it before it began. This referee should not be allowed into a fight again. He obviously does not know how to do the job.
Davis now moves on to a potential fight with Gamboa, if what we are hearing is true. Let’s hope they give this referee the night off if that fight or ANY other fight materializes.
