Gary Antonio Russell, 13-0, 11 KO’s, came out strong and began mauling Jose Maria Cardenas 16-4, 13 KO’s, knocking him down in the first round with some hammering shots. Throughout the rest of the fight, Russell would forge ahead and maul his opponent that held on for dear life. The referee was definitely not dealing with this match evenly, heavily favoring Russell and warning his opponent for just about everything he could without issuing any warning for Russell, who was doing various illegal things.
In the sixth round, Russell came out to close it and got Cardenas in the corner and unloaded, prompting the doctor to stop it. Even though this fight wasn’t in much question, Cardenas was throwing back and it should not have been stopped. Whatever the case, Russell looked very good in this outing and it should be interesting to see how his career develops from here.
