As you are aware I am a huge fan of indie horror and my major reasons being they tend to be more creative and often more diverse than mainstream and there has been plenty of fine examples of this, such as, Rise of the scarecrows, Evil awakening, Monsturd, Thankskilling and of course this one, Fungicide. Fungicide being co written and directed by Dave Wascavage, who also directed Suburban Sasquatch in which is worth checking out if you’re a fan of low budget indie horror.
Now regards this movie, the setting being in and around a guest house known as, Mountain hideaway, in which is owned by, nature loving, Jade Moon (Mary Wascavage). Her guest include a crazy scientist, Silas Purcell (David Weldon), who wishes to carry on with his experiments while at the guest house, also a wrestler who is wanting to escape the stress of everyday life being, Tony Ignitus (Dave Bonavita). And finally an estate agent known as, Jackson P Jackson played by the director, (Dave Wascavage). So by share accident Silas manages to trip on arrival at the guest house, his experiment being in a test tube bursts from the case he was carrying and leaks upon the porch, dripping upon mushrooms below.
Basically mushrooms grow and multiply and it soon becomes a mushroom version of, ‘Night of the living dead,’ the group surrounded by hundreds of flesh hungry mushrooms in which they must battle against, however the group do manage to have an experienced survival expert to help them known as, Major Wang (Wes Miller). And if the fungi weren’t a big enough problem, there is the irritating deranged Silas to deal with, who is drunk with power regards what he as accidentally created.
This movie without doubt is share fun and there are some serious laughs along the way, from stick fights with the mushrooms to wrestling matches, and as regards the special affects they often slip in to obvious computer images and plastic dolls for dead bodies, and not so convincing giant mushrooms, however if you can see beyond this and realise this movie was completed on a extremely low budget and just sit back and enjoy the plot and humour in which is executed perfectly you will probably enjoy it. And the bargain is this movie is part of a four film box set, titled, Drenched in blood…
Regards this indie movie on the indie movie 1 to 10 scale I would gladly give it a 8/10
It just leaves me to quote from the movie…
“Welcome to Mountain hideaway the last place you will stay”
