The Film Detective has done it again with the Blu-ray release of FLIGHT TO MARS, a 1951 sci-fi film that hasn’t been seen in a long time. I, personally, have never seen this and it was very enjoyable and you can see the work that went into it. The restoration is very good and audio is as well. A lot of TLC went into this release and whenever you get a Blu-ray from The Film Detective, it automatically becomes a collector’s item.
FLIGHT TO MARS is very dialogue-driven. This is not STAR WARS with incredible action sequences. It relies on good writing as a group of earthlings land on Mars and encounters a group of Martians that are in dire need of rescue. The battle ensues as the Martians plan becomes known that they want to hijack the ship and take over the planet Earth.
This wasn’t exactly my sort of movie, but it’s really enjoyable. I have seen the 1950’s style monster movies that came out about this time and it’s very similar. The special effects aren’t very good, the costumes aren’t very good, but if you can rewind the clock and take it all in context, this is a good film. The story keeps pushing forward and the dialogue is good.
I recommend FLIGHT TO MARS. It is a collector’s item and if you collect things as I do, and if you like 1950’s sci-fi films, you’ll want this. It was a lot of fun.
