SYNOPSIS

Superstar rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun has reached a crucial moment in her career. At the age of twenty, she is soon to retire but has one final goal: winning Olympic gold. As Margarita pushes her body to its breaking point, Irina Viner-Usmanova, her strict coach, assails her with caustic, withering critiques. Is Irina a merciless tyrant or the motivating guidance Margarita needs to fulfill her dreams? Driven by the sport’s most infamous, groundbreaking and fiercely determined coach, OVER THE LIMIT becomes a nail-biting behind-the-scenes drama, which looks at the grueling Russian system for training athletes and the intense physical and mental labor put into a sport that thrives on its beautiful aesthetics.

For five years, former gymnast and documentarian Marta Prus followed Mamun on her pressure-filled quest for Olympic Gold. OVER THE LIMIT, Prus’ first feature-length documentary and an Official Selection at IDFA Amsterdam, the Moscow Int’l. Documentary Film Festival and Goteborg Film Festival, has been called “harrowing and thoroughly captivating” by Ben Croll of Screen Daily and “a film about what drives us, beyond logic and comfort” by Chelsea Phillips-Carr of POV Magazine.
