“Prison is full of chubby chasers.” – Larry the Cable Guy
I’m not a fan of Larry the Cable Guy’s standup, but I have to say that the more films I watch with him, the more I find appreciation for his comedic talent. It’s the same way that I felt about Tim Allen. For years, I thought Allen was incapable of being funny, but he then moved into feature films and found his stride. In the 2007 comedy “DELTA FARCE”, Larry the Cable guy teams up with DJ Qualls (ROAD TRIP) and Bill Engvall in this buddy comedy that travels the same road as THE THREE AMIGOS both in setting and in storyline. It fails to compare, but it is not as bad as the critics have said. In fact, I could not find a good review for this film.
Larry (Larry the Cable Guy) is working at a restaurant when his girlfriend announces that she is pregnant. He goes over the intercom to inform all the patrons but his heart gets broken when she announces to everyone that it’s not his. Everett (Qualls) is obsessed with law enforcement but has psychological problems and isn’t that bright. Bill (Engvall) is living off a settlement that he got for falling down at Wal-Mart. All three are in the Army Reserves and are used to the weekend warrior status, but that all changes when Sgt. Kilgore (Keith David) sends them to Iraq, but things get screwy along the way.
The trio and Kilgore get accidentally dropped in Mexico, but they believe it to be Iraq and they also believe Kilgore to be dead and bury him. They then leave to liberate the Iraqi people and start by shooting a donkey and screaming at two Mexican men. This leads to a village in serious trouble from a group of thugs led by, Carlos Santana (Danny Trejo), and the three goofs must do the right thing and protect it and save the villagers. Yes, this is remarkably like THE THREE AMIGOS.
Santana and his men capture Kilgore and subject him to sexual harassment by Ruben (Joe Nunez), the gay nephew of Santana. Some of the torture is forcing Kilgore to sing a duet with Ruben. Keith David always delivers in any genre and he does great in this comedic role. His angry portrayal mixed with discomfort is very funny. Danny Trejo has a lot of fun in his role as well. I think he understood that he wasn’t working with the best material and made up for it in his overacting and delivery.
A final showdown in the Mexican village between the Santana gang and the four US soldiers takes place and much like THE THREE AMIGOS, the town steps up beside the outsiders to take on the bad guys. It leads to a happy ending and the three misfits getting respect.
DELTA FARCE has gotten universally trashed by the critics, but I must say that it wasn’t that bad. The strength of this movie is the strength of the cast. Larry the Cable Guy, Keith David and Danny Trejo do very well in their roles. It is, without question, a THE THREE AMIGOS knockoff, but it still serves its purpose. It entertains and is worth a watch. I recommend it.
