Debris (2015) – HORROR SHORT FILM REVIEW

DEBRIS is a short film written and directed by Nicole Jones-Dion. Immediately, it is obvious that this group understands film and put forth a quality production with a great cinematic look and feel. There is enough curiosity built within the first couple minutes to hold the viewer and the mystery carries on until the completion.

Royce (Rob Scattergood) doesn’t have much. He has dedicated his life to searching for items that will bankroll him for the rest of his life. He stumbles upon a case and an old sword that may be just what he was seeking. He calls his ex, Parker (Amanda Moyer), and convinces her to come over and evaluate his discovery. It was all that he had hoped for, but it comes with a great price.

Parker’s new man, Lukas (Josef Urban), is in the same business and tells the story of the sword after he sees the images, noting that as much as it’s worth, there would be no buyers. They would understand the risk and avoid buying it. It changes a person and Royce begins to change. When his pushy landlord (Mike Muratore) storms and demands rent, he meets the wrong side of the sword and it doesn’t end there. Royce has become consumed.

DEBRIS is a 16 minute film and when you review a film of that length, it’s difficult to really rate it. You get into the film and before you know it, it’s over. However, the short film is a business card for most filmmakers and for Nicole Jones-Dion, she did a very good job here. The cinematography is spot on and the acting from the main cast was very good. The different settings keep the movie interesting and there is an aura of mystery that is maintained throughout. You keep wondering what will happen next.

I enjoyed DEBRIS. It makes me curious to see what Jones-Dion can do with a feature film. She was able to do some very positive things here and cast it well. There isn’t much to mark off in this one. I recommend it.
