Interview by Geno McGahee
ROZU (Japanese for Rose) is a post-hardcore 4-piece from Denver, Colorado consisting of longtime artists Tim Graham on vocals, David Sundine on guitar, Brian Robertson on drums, and Henry Navarre on bass. With a hard-hitting debut EP on the horizon ROZU aims to take both local and national music scenes by storm. With full intention to tour constantly and consistently in support of their debut effort the latter half of 2018, ROZU is the next Denver band to keep your eyes on, as their penchant for all things driving, melodic, and heavy make them a standout you won’t want to miss.
Scared Stiff had the opportunity to sit down with Tim Graham of ROZU and talk about their band and what they have in store for us.
GM: Can you introduce yourself to the public? How would you describe your band, your style, your message?
Hey guys! My name is Tim Graham and I am the vocalist for Rozu. Really Rozu is a 4 piece band of long time Denver artists, we ride a fine line of Metalcore and Post-Hardcore styles where we bring a lot of heaviness with moments of pure and beautiful melody. Our message is that of Hope lyrically that is, with talking of our previous low points and struggles of everyday life with an underlying message that things Do and Will get better.
GM: What got you into music?
I’ve always loved music and wanted to be in a band, but I never really took full advantage of that little voice in the back of my head to give it a try. I saw Underoath back in high school and really knew this is what I wanted to do. I was a tour manager for a few years before finally getting the opportunity to take over on vocals for the band I was touring with then it was just all uphill/downhill from there.
GM: What musicians/bands were your inspirations?
My main influences are Spencer Chamberlin from Underoath and Craig Owens during the Chiodos era. Those two vocalists have so much emotion and energy on stage which I have always admired and looked up to.
GM: Talk about your latest album. What should the public expect?
I feel like this album is going to prove to people just how serious we are about this project and how much we have grown as artists in such a short span of time. We have been pushing ourselves to be the absolute best we can be then some, so I think we are really going to turn some heads.
GM: What has been the best experience you’ve had being in the business?
Networking and meeting so many people of the same headspace as myself. People I have looked up to I now call friends and I think that is just such a cool and unique experience that most other industries can’t offer.
GM: What has been the worst experience you’ve had?
I think it’s not about the worst experience but all the poor choices or struggles I have had on this road thus far. I have learned from these not so great experiences and have given me the hindsight to push forward on a better path surrounded by people I want to be surrounded by.
GM: With the changing mediums in the distribution of music, how difficult is it to make a living in the business?
Everyone has to have a side hustle, but I think this digital age is already being able to show the industry and the fans who is actually working their asses off. It has really cut out the fake it until you make it mentality.
GM: Any final thoughts?
I just want to say thank you for having us and thank you to our fans. As this year is closing out we are looking forward to seeing you all a lot more in 2020!
