DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) – ZOMBIE/HORROR Movie Review

FOR EVERY DAWN THERE IS A DAY

This film being the third in, Romero’s dead series is actually my favourite, with the likes of Tom Savini being involved in the movie, it was destined to be a ground breaking gory flick, with bodies being split in two, decapitations and guts spilling out…

The movie… A band of soldiers and scientist are holding out in an underground facility, seeking answers and searching for other survivors in this post-apocalyptic zombie movie.

Tensions are obviously high, as answers to a cure to whatever as caused the dead to rise becomes impossible to find… Captain, Robert Rhodes (Joseph Pilato) is the new head of the army after the death of his superior, and he is a no nonsense leader that demands answers from the scientists, the head of the division being, Dr. Mathew Logan (Richard Liberty) known as, Frankenstein, for his unorthodox approach to his research. Dr Logan, having a prized student, Bub (Sherman Howard) a zombie he believes he is taming and is convinced that is the way forward when it comes to answers…

Dr Logan, is as insane as the tyrant, Captain Rhode’s, and are both bound for a head on collision that spells disaster and will threaten the survival of the whole compound, therefore it is down to, Dr Sarah Bowman (Lori Cardille) who is trying to be the diplomat to try and keep the personal together, although it is obviously falling apart, John (Terry Alexander) an helicopter pilot and McDermott (Jariath Conroy) want out and don’t see the point in the work that is going on within the compound…

The true turning point in this movie comes when, Captain Rhode’s discovers, Dr Logan’s dark secret being… Logan is feeding the dead soldiers to his zombie experiments, it then becomes a battle for survival, Dr Sarah Bowman, John and McDermott must escape the outraged, Rhodes and his men, also avoid being eaten by zombies…

There are great gore scenes in this movie, especially in the crazed. Logan’s laboratory where he experiments on the zombies, with guts falling out, heads missing and plenty of blood. As regards the zombies, Bub, plays a great part in this movie and grows a dislike towards, Rhodes that leads to a strange sort of showdown.

And as regards this movie, just like most of Romero’s has a political element, with humanity failing to work together, as this small band of survivors demonstrate pretty well, what with the power struggle with the mad, Logan and crazed, Rhodes, both thinking they know best.

A movie in many ways that just like its two predecessors as influenced many other zombie flicks, though many of those failing to live up to the three…

George A Romero, you truly are the Master when it comes to zombies…

Rating: 9.5/10
