Dawn of the Mummy (1981) – Zombie Mummies HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

I like mummies. I don’t like when mummies start off as mummies but then turn into humans like the 1999 movie “THE MUMMY” did. I would have really enjoyed it more if he was the walking dead, decomposing and zombie-like. In the 1981 movie “DAWN OF THE MUMMY,” the do it right. The mummy is a mummy and he has an army of the dead.

Rick (George Peck) has opened up the tomb with his two stooges to steal some gold, but they encounter a photographer and his models. Rick compromises with Bill (Barry Sattels), the photographer and he is now taking a few days inside the tomb to take some pictures. It’s cool as long as they stay out of Rick’s way.

None of the people involved in the gold theft or the photo shoot seem to notice that the mummy that they uncovered is missing. He is now free and he has raised his army of the dead to kill. The movie is pretty good, but it kicks into high gear when the mummy action begins.

The mummy begins killing people and his army of zombies is doing what zombies do…eat human flesh and disrupt things. The gore really picks up at the end, which should satisfy those bloodthirsty zombie fans.

This is basically an original zombie movie with some great overacting. The fun factor is very high and if you are a zombie fan, a mummy fan, or a fan of over the top performances, you will enjoy this.

DAWN OF THE MUMMY is a winner. The characters are amusing and when Rick gets gold fever, you can’t help but to laugh. His celebration is a thing of beauty. I highly recommend this fun film.

Rating: 7.5/10 – Mummies make good zombies
