Cinema Stare’s debut LP Hum and the Glow was recorded and engineered by Chris Teti (The World Is…, Fiddlehead, Hostage Calm) at the beginning of 2020 in Burlington, CT at Silver Bullet Studios. Shreve and guitarist Jason Moriarty began the writing process by sharing various demos, some unused from older projects, others simply lacking a home.
Upon bringing into the fold Pasquale Liuzzi and Joseph Pelegano on drums and bass respectively, the songs were quickly injected with new life, and a fully formed album took shape. Citing influence from Death Cab For Cutie, The Starting Line and Jimmy Eat World (to name a few), the four piece use these as a springboard into something uniquely theirs, balancing a youthful immediacy and energy with refined songcraft and confidence that belies their years.
Hum and the Glow’s ten tracks see Cinema Stare expertly navigate between moments of driving riffage (Adult Onset, Never Know), lush piano (Kansas 2017), and balladry (Ellie Nash, Balloon Suit). By the time the final notes of album closer ‘In Reverse’ ring out, there is a sense that Cinema Stare have stuck the landing, dusting themselves off and greeting the other side of the with a grin and a “What now?”.
One can only anticipate what comes next for the group; for the time being we will have to be content with their first victory, taking the first steps into growing up with no intention of giving in.
