In 1988, the television landscape was a rather tame one. The Cosby Show was still going strong. Roseanne and The Wonder Years debuted. Other shows like Growing Pains, Cheers and ALF were going strong and the tone was rather light and fun. Changing the pace was a couple shows including In the Heat of the Night and China Beach.
A lot of time has gone by since 1988, but good television stands the test of time. China Beach is one of those shows that does not get old and Time Life has put out the entire series on 19 DVDs, including all 62 episodes along with some cool bonus material.
China Beach had style. That is a lost element with a lot of shows. The music and grit, mixed with occasional levity makes the show one of the best of its time and an all-time classic. The show surrounds the Vietnam War, bringing the perspective of the women, the doctors, the civilians and more. The show isn’t afraid to push the issue and kill off characters when you wouldn’t expect it.
Time Life presents the show in the best way possible. I enjoyed watching the show again after all these years and just appreciating the story-telling without apologies. This show is meant to bring reality to the screen and get an emotion from the audience and succeeds. I highly recommend it.
