Cherry Falls (2000) – Whodunit with a Twist

Brittany Murphy stars as virginal Jody in this strange and often comedic horror whodunit.  Jody’s boyfriend Kenny Ascott (Gabriel Mann) attempts to verbally push Jody into sex, but she refuses.  He threatens to break up with her and goes as far as to flirt with her mother to prove his point.  Still, Jody stands firm and refuses to succumb to his advances.

Heartbroken, she goes to school the next day and finds out that two of her classmates were brutally murdered.  Worse still, Kenny was all over some blonde.  Jody seeks solace and approval from her teacher Leonard Marliston (Jay Mohr) with whom she shared similar interests with.

Soon, other virgins are hunted down and killed.  Jody thankfully escaped with her life when attacked by what appeared to be a tall black-haired woman with a white streak.

Jody’s father, Sherriff Brent Marken (Michael Biehn) is hot on the case trying to figure out who the killer is before they strike again, and before every virgin in town starts having sex with any and every one.

The town is filled with suspects and as the bodies mount, Marken is forced to look back at his past as the description Jody provides sounds a lot like a girl he used to go to school with.  That girl just disappeared into thin air after claiming that a group of boys raped her.

Is she back for revenge?  Are the murders related?  Does Jody and the Sheriff have a closer-than-natural father/daughter relationship? You’ll have to watch to find out.

This was a fun movie.  I thought the whole twist with having the virgins as victims was pretty decent.  It definitely had its satirical moments.  There were a few times when the film just tried too hard.  They’d make relationships between red wine and blood, a zipped body bag and a girl zipping her coat.  Those moments were just lame.

The ending is expected but still ridiculous and fun.

I highly recommend this.  Overall, it’s sort of like Scream (1996) meets Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou (1987). Though, I certainly prefer Prom Night II, this was a pleasant surprise.

Currently, it’s on Flix On Demand so anyone with cable should be able to get it for free.

Scared Stiff Rating:  6.5/10  RIP Brittany Murphy
