Daredevil: Into the Ring (2015) – NETFLIX MARVEL SERIES – EPISODE 1 REVIEW

I remember the first time that I saw Daredevil. In 1989, he was in the made for TV movie “THE TRIAL OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK,” and it was terrible. It was as bad as a movie can get and both Hulk and Daredevil were treated very poorly. It was a kick in the nuts for two reasons. One, Daredevil, a cool superhero, was shown in black spandex and looked like a goof and secondly, I loved the Hulk TV series. This was an insult to that as well. The Daredevil series that they hoped to spinoff wasn’t to be and the character was forgotten for fourteen years.

In 2003, DAREDEVIL was brought to the big screen with Ben Affleck in the lead. It was mediocre at best and left a bad taste in the mouth of the comic book fans. It took 12 years for this character to be revisited and this time, they vowed to do it the right way. Netflix and Marvel have come together to bring the Daredevil to the small screen and the results far surpass what was done in 2003. Realistically, you cannot compare.

Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) was blinded as a child but that has not stopped him from starting a law practice with his sarcastic buddy, Froggy Nelson (Elden Henson). They are seeking their first client and when Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) is found next to a dead body with a bloody knife in her hand, they see an opportunity. Despite the evidence against Page, the prosecutor has yet to charge her and when a prison guard tries to choke her to death, it becomes obvious that there is more to the picture.

Karen found out something that she shouldn’t have and now she has the big crime boss looking to kill her. She moves in, temporarily, with Murdock and she begins talking about the corruption and the embezzling that she discovered with the company she was working for and that was why there was a hit on her.

Murdock is lawyer by day, crime fighter by night and found a connection with the crime boss before he represented Karen. He stopped a sex slave ring shipment in what will partially define this series. The fight choreography is as good as it gets. It has a very real feel to it. They elected to avoid any CGI or the quick cuts that plague action films nowadays. It was old school action and was amazing.

Karen is proven innocent and she now works with the budding law firm. This is the right series to bring this unique character to life. The lawyer that defends the innocent and the vigilante that punishes the guilty is a great theme and foundation to build a good series on. They did it here and they didn’t even put the incredible Hulk on trial to do it.

INTO THE RING was a great introduction to this new series. Cox proves to be the right choice for this character and, overall, the cast is incredible. There is such attention to detail with this series that it’s not surprising that there is such a buzz surrounding it.

Rating: 8/10
